The Schoolboys' Own Library |

The Schoolboys' Own Library was a popular publication by the Amalgamated Press. It ran for over 400 issues from 1925 to 1940. Most stories are heavily abridged versions of series or single stories from the Gem, Magnet, and Boys' Friend. There are a few entirely original stories in the list. The authors of the original stories were, justifiably, incensed at the way in which their work was hacked about - sometimes to the point of being unrecognisable. However, despite this, the SOL (as it came to be known) was exceedingly popular; and remains so, with copies in good condition being eagerly sought after. The lists give the Issue Number, Title, where appropriate the school setting for the story, the source of the original story or series, and the year in which it was originally published. Many of the Gems were reprinted and the date of reprinting is indicated for stories re-issued in later years. |
